October Rising Star: Katie Duclos-Zagame, MSW, LICSW

Uwill’s Monthly Rising Star is a new program that acknowledges one counselor every month who has “shined bright” in support of Uwill in their first year at Uwill. Congratulations, Katie Duclos-Zagame, MSW, LICSW! Since joining the Uwill team, Katie has completed over 200 sessions across Massachusetts.

Check out our interview with Katie where she discusses the convenience Uwill provides students, helping students become more authentic, and tips for those heading home to difficult family situations over Thanksgiving.

What excites you the most about working with Uwill?
I love that students feel comfortable opening up and sharing their stories with me. Their journey to college is just the beginning. Each student brings unique worries, fears, excitement, and goals. Being part of all that process and witnessing their growth is both inspiring and enlightening.

Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
It’s wonderful that Uwill is offered as a free service to students. Many I’ve worked with have found it easy to hear about and access without a resource like this on campus. Many students wouldn’t seek out support due to barriers such as cost, time constraints, or difficulty finding a therapist. Uwill removes those barriers and meets students where they are.

What is the most important lesson that you have learned through your work?
I’ve learned that therapy is so much more than just therapy. It’s connection, reflection, and growth. For college students, it’s about navigating new kinds of stress, learning who they are, finding safe spaces, and giving themselves permission to be authentic.

What was it that first attracted you to working with Uwill?
I would have loved a program like this when I was in college. Many of my peers struggled. Some felt lonely or disappointed when college wasn’t what they expected. I saw how powerful it could be to have someone to talk to during that time. I wanted to be able to offer that kind of support to others.

What impact has Uwill had on you as a professional?
Uwill has completely broadened my mindset and enhanced my skill set. Supporting students as they identify their strengths and realize their value has been incredibly rewarding. Helping them recognize their impact both on themselves and their communities is truly what this work is all about.

What advice do you have for students who may be returning home for Thanksgiving break that may be experiencing struggles at home?
Remind yourself of how far you’ve come and the strength you’ve shown. Use the coping skills that have supported you so far. Stay true to yourself and set healthy boundaries. Remember your progress. Progress you’ve made is yours to carry with you. Wherever you go.
