The Importance of Having Immediate Access to Mental Health Support

Uwill counselors are committed to our mission of offering immediate mental health and wellness support while eliminating barriers to care. With Uwill, students are able to book a teletherapy appointment with a licensed therapist that they choose based on their needs and preferences, choosing at a time that fits their schedule.

For World Mental Health Awareness Day, Uwill therapists share their thoughts on the importance of students having immediate access to mental health support.

Taking care of your mental health is becoming more prevalent and accepted in our society. Being able to offer this support to college students for free really helps them learn how to deal with stress, manage time, and prepare them to be more successful as they become adults. I really wish that I would have had that help when I was in college and had access to those services.

I have numerous clients who have been very vocal about the fact that they have only sought services on Uwill because of the privacy and confidentiality factor. These were a lot of BIPOC students who were my most clinically acute, my most vulnerable, and the most deserving clients that I’ve worked with.

For a lot of my students, this was their first time they really took autonomy over their own mental health and a lot of the barriers were removed that didn’t allow them to seek counseling before. Many of my clients were first-time therapy seekers so it was really good to see that they were able to finally get the counseling that they had been wanting to get but for various reasons weren’t able to.

Uwill is super easy to use and one of its best features is the same-day access. If a student logs into the platform, they can often schedule an appointment the same day if they choose. Navigating college life can be stressful—students are learning to be independent adults, but they’re not fully there yet. Having a service where if they’re having a rough day because of an upcoming exam or a failed test, they can see a counselor that same day is incredible.

What’s really good about Uwill is it is available to students over the summer and winter breaks. That’s oftentimes when family dynamics come up and family conflicts arise. But the student doesn’t have to pause their therapy goals. They don’t have to put a pause on their healing journey. They can either continue working with me over the summer or match with someone that’s in their state.

I think counseling should be for everybody. So it doesn’t have to be just someone who has a diagnosis or is dealing with a crisis. I think anybody who wants to access a counselor should be able to. And the fact is, college counseling centers across the country are overwhelmed. So even someone with a diagnosis, even someone in crisis, is having a hard time making an appointment, let alone someone who is not dealing with either of those things and just wants to talk through life. This type of platform allows a lot more students to have access to a therapist and I think that’s a great thing.

In my private practice, I often notice that clients in college are worried about their insurance and finances and “how am I going to navigate all of this?” Uwill takes away all the unknowns and students feel more confident and comfortable without worrying about their budget. And I think that’s one of the best things that Uwill offers to students.

I believe that mental health care is a human right so accessibility to this type of resource is really important because there’s just such a high need for it. I hear all the time from these students that they’re on a really long wait list or they were referred because their counseling center is at capacity. This is an amazing option to be able to provide for people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to this resource.
