February Hero of the Month: Daniella Franov Gregory, LCSW, LCADC

Every month, we spotlight a counselor who has gone above and beyond for Uwill as our Uwill Hero of the Month. This month, we are delighted to recognize Daniella Franov Gregory, LCSW, LCADC as Uwill’s Monthly Hero.

Joining the Uwill team in June 2023, Daniella has always gone over and above for Uwill. In that time, she’s had over 500 appointments, impacting the lives of students all across New Jersey, all with a very high feedback rating.

Check out the interview below to learn more about Daniella’s enthusiasm for working with young adults, the importance of accessing teletherapy, and some advice for students approaching mid-term exams.

What excites you the most about working with Uwill?
I think the most exciting part of working with Uwill is definitely the population. Working with college students, I would say, is my most preferred and ideal population to work with. I love working with young adults and just being able to help students grow up and actually turn into the adults that they are becoming.

Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
Obviously there’s still this stigma with mental health and when a student has to go through insurance they can fear that their parents might find out about them seeking mental health services. Uwill definitely provides that outlet where they don’t have to fear that stigma or repercussions of their parents finding out if it’s something that they’re not ready to disclose yet. And there’s so many students out there that are unfortunately in those situations and Uwill allows them that privacy and that access for them to get the care that they need without feeling any type of way.

What aspect of your work would you say that you enjoy the most?
I know this sounds cliche but I would say being able to set your own schedule. It’s really nice being able to pick and choose your hours and allow for the most access to students without it feeling like a typical 9 to 5. Because depending on the class schedule, students are unable to work out with those times. So the fact that you can set earlier hours, midday hours, later hours, it’s great for me and I think it’s great for the students too.

What is the most important lesson that you’ve learned through your work?
That’’s a tough one! I think the most important lesson is to remind ourselves that we are human. We always have to have that constant empathy and really remember that students are here because they’re going through something. It’s important to provide that support and just be that safe person for people.

Do you have any advice for students who may be trying to manage stress during their upcoming midterm exams?
Yes! Like we all know, sleep is the most important thing. Don’t try to pull those all-nighters because they most likely won’t be the most helpful, and I know from experience! I think when it comes to midterms, the most important thing is just taking your time and practicing patience with yourself and doing little things that help you boost your self-esteem. During exams, I would just write a little note saying “you got this!” on the exam that I would take a peek at after each question and just remind myself in the moment to just focus on one question at a time.
