February Rising Star: Rebecca Lamp, MSW, LISW

Uwill’s Monthly Rising Star is a new program that acknowledges one counselor every month who has “shined bright” in their first year at Uwill.

Congratulations Rebecca Lamp, MSW, LISW! In her first year with Uwill Rebecca has completed over 500 sessions with Ohio Students.

Check out our interview with Rebecca where she dives into the diversity of students she gets to interact with, how hearing others stories has impacted her, and a tip for upcoming mid-term exams.

Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
Yes, I believe that mental health care is a human right so accessibility to this type of resource is really important because there’s just such a high need for it and not enough providers. I hear all the time from these students that they’re on a really long wait list or they were referred because their counseling center is totally at capacity. So I think this is just a really amazing option to be able to provide for people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to this resource.

What aspect of your work would you say that you enjoy the most?
The aspect I enjoy the most is the huge diversity that comes with this population. I think when people think of a college student, they think like 18 to 22 year-olds. But this is actually a very, very diverse group of people. I meet with students who are all over the place in age. Some of them are parents and grandparents. Some of them are from other cultures and they are international students from overseas. Some of them are extremely accomplished professionals. Some of them are high schoolers who are in a college credit plus program. So I think that part of it keeps me really interested and keeps me really enjoying the work day to day because there’s such a huge variety and that meshes really well with who I am as a person. It keeps every day unique. It keeps every day interesting.

What would you say is the most important lesson that you’ve learned through your work?
I think the most important lesson that I’ve learned is that relationships are the agents of change. I really believe that. I think human beings are meant to live life helping each other. We are meant to do life together. Nobody is meant to be an island. So it’s really been an honor for me as a professional to meet so many people and to hear their stories. And I think this just makes me a better person. This type of work makes me a better person. It makes me grateful. It makes me more well-rounded. I just really enjoy it.

What impact has Uwill had on you as a professional?
Uwill has really allowed me to hone my skills as a therapist. It has allowed me to manage my time even better. It has also allowed me to really practice what I preach in some ways because I’m constantly telling people “hey, you got to take care of yourself.” Sometimes when you work for a mental health company, the schedule is so rigorous that it doesn’t allow you to do that ironically. So I think with Uwill the ability to design my own schedule and work at my own pace has really helped me to take good care of myself long-term and it allows me to never burn out because I have that option..

Do you have any advice for students who may be trying to manage stress for upcoming midterms?
My advice to everyone is always to do your best to take good care of yourself. Find some type of daily habit that makes you feel calm and that you know “this thing in my life reduces my stress” and then do it every day. This will strengthen your capacity to respond to stress in a healthy way. It will strengthen your brain’s tendency to manage stress well in the future. So that is my best advice.
