August Hero of the Month: Jenny Kim, LMFT
Every month, we spotlight a counselor who has gone above and beyond for Uwill as our Uwill Hero of the Month. This month, we are delighted to recognize Jenny Kim, LMFT as Uwill’s Monthly Hero.
Since joining the Uwill team in January 2024, Jenny has always gone above and beyond for Uwill. In that time, she’s had over 500 appointments, impacting the lives of students all across California and Colorado all with a very high feedback rating.
Check out our interview with Jenny as she discusses the importance of removing barriers for students, the flexibility teletherapy gives her as a working mother of two, and some tips on beating stress for the upcoming school year.
What excites you the most about working with Uwill?
I think the organization is so innovative in providing therapy for college students so I’m just excited to work with a platform that makes counseling accessible for all.
Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
A lot of my students are, for many of them, moving out of the house, not having to go through their parents insurance. This was their first time where they really took autonomy over their own mental health. And so a lot of the barriers were removed that didn’t allow them to seek counseling before. A lot of my clients were first-time new clients so that was just really, really good to see that they were able to finally get the counseling that they had been wanting to get but for various reasons weren’t able to.
What is the most important lesson that you’ve learned through your work?
Counseling can really change people and can really help people.
What was it that first attracted you to working with Uwill?
That it offered flexibility. That it worked with collegians. That the success of universities believing and willing to partner with a platform like this seemed like there was a need and Uwill fit that. So I was excited to be a part of that movement.
What impact has Uwill had on you as a professional?
This was my first time working solely remotely and via telehealth. Learning the technical stuff and how it works with a 30-minute time frame was good. That was good growth. I feel like I expanded my professional development in that sense because before it was always one hour sessions in person. So it kind of puts you in a different way of doing things but I enjoyed it. I did feel like I caught on pretty quickly and as a mom of two kids I don’t know if I could go back or would want to go back.
Would you recommend working with Uwill to a colleague?
Yes, I have and I would 1,000%.
What advice do you have for students who may be stressing about the beginning of the school year?
I would say reflect back on what high school was like and how you felt then or even before the first day of kindergarten, the first day of junior high. These are all familiar feelings that you have probably gone through before and came out of it feeling very differently than that first day. The big picture is to know that, though it’s new, it’s not so new where you haven’t lived and gone through it and come out on the other side of it.
