February Rising Star: Lisa Beneventano, LCSW

Uwill’s Monthly Rising Star acknowledges one counselor every month who has “shined bright” in support of Uwill in their first year as a member of our counseling community. Congratulations, Lisa Beneventano, LSCW.  Since joining the Uwill team, Lisa  has completed over 100 sessions across New York.

Check out our interview with Lisa as she discusses working with students, how 30-minute sessions have helped her, and advice for students adjusting to a new routine.

What excites you the most about working with Uwill?
I love working with college students. College is a time of not only academic and intellectual growth but a time of social-emotional growth, identity formation, increased independence and so much more.

Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
I work with many high school students that need support through college. Insurance, cost of co-pays, privacy in treatment and many other things can be barriers to services. I have seen many high school students go off to college and not have the support they need. Sometimes there are changes people are working on in high school that they are not ready for or unable to implement until they are in college.

What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most?
I love connecting with people and being there when they are able to learn new things about themselves or make changes in their lives.

What are some skills you have learned from Uwill that you have been able to apply in your everyday practice?
The 30 minute sessions at Uwill have definitely taught me to be a bit more direct (in a good way) as a clinician. I have carried this over to my other practices as well. I realized the time pressure pushed me in a good way.

What was it that first attracted you to working with Uwill?
I like that there is a safety net associated with remote appointments. I also liked the idea of working with college students. Young adults is a population I really enjoy.

How has being a member of Uwill’s Counselor Community impacted you as a professional?
I am expanding my licensure and have learned things from the trainings I have done.

Now that the New Year is underway, what advice do you have for students who may be adjusting to a new academic schedule or routine?
Don’t worry about the ‘shoulds’ for academic schedules or routines. Instead, focus on what works for you and be patient with yourself as you figure that out.
