July Hero of the Month: Manoucheka Emmanuel, LCSW

Every month, we spotlight a counselor who has gone above and beyond for Uwill as our Uwill Hero of the Month. This month, we are delighted to recognize Manoucheka Emmanuel as Uwill’s Monthly Hero.

Since joining the Uwill team in June 2023, Manoucheka has always gone the extra mile for Uwill. In that time, she’s had over 500 appointments, impacting the lives of students all across Delaware and New Jersey all with a very high feedback rating.

Check out our interview with Manoucheka as she breaks down how she wishes she had Uwill when she was a student, the value of free and immediate teletherapy, and how she’s spreading the word about working with Uwill.

What excites you the most about working with Uwill?
I think the platform itself is fantastic. It’s extremely user-friendly, and the staff are great to work with—always responsive and supportive. I don’t think I’ve ever had to wait more than a day for a response. One of the things I enjoy most is the opportunity to work with college students. I remember being in college and wishing I had access to a platform like Uwill, where students can receive counseling as needed instead of having to wait for an opening at the campus counseling office. Being able to provide that level of accessibility and support to students has truly been one of my favorite aspects of this work.

Could you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
Uwill is super easy to use, and one of its best features is the same-day access. If a student logs into the platform, they can often schedule an appointment the same day if a slot is available. Navigating college life can be stressful—students are learning to be independent adults, but they’re not fully there yet. Having a service where, if they’re having a rough day because of an upcoming exam or a failed test, they can log in and see a counselor that same day is incredible. On top of that, the service is free, which makes it even more accessible. The combination of easy access and immediate support is truly one of the best things Uwill offers students.

What aspect of your work would you say that you enjoy the most?
I just love being a counselor and developing a rapport and a connection with the students. One of my students specifically, we started working together during her freshman year, and now she’s going into her junior year.  Watching her grow from an 18 year-old to a 20 year-old and now she’s thinking about grad school. She just went through something, a very significant change in her life, and I was able to help her go through that transition and to see her come out on the other side has been a joy.

They’re becoming adults and having someone go through that transition with them is one of the things that I’ve really enjoyed. I didn’t think I would really like working with college students as much because I typically work with adult adults, usually, women in their 30’s and up but being able to help those students transition like that has been awesome.

What impact has Uwill had on you as a professional
You know, since I joined Uwill I think this is the second time that they’ve honored me. I don’t like anything flashy, right? Doing a headshot for work was like “Oh my God, am I going to be on the internet!?” I got a Top 50 counselor award and I was so excited. It’s actually sitting right there on my little desk. I went home and I showed it to my family. I was like “look at this!” I think social workers go into the field just to be just to help. That’s why I became a social worker, not for awards. I’ve helped all sorts of people in different populations, but I’ve never I I’ve never really been honored and Uwill has done it twice so far. And I didn’t realize how much I needed that.

Would you recommend working with Uwill to a colleague?
100%. I have done it. I think I referred it to at least three or four people and I know, three of them are currently working with Uwill students. Absolutely, I tell every single person who wants to hear about Uwill about Uwill. I have recommended coworkers to work with Uwill because I think it’s such an awesome platform.

Do you have any advice for students who may be stressed about the upcoming school year?
Sign up for Uwill! Get on the platform. Get a counselor who’s able to really help you transition. Things are very different in college, especially if you’re gonna be living on campus. I would recommend that they find a Uwill counselor to help them go through the next four years. That was a really important part of my life. Going from being 18 to like 22, that was a really big moment. And I think having someone to walk you through that would be awesome.
