July Rising Star: Wendy Tien, LCSW
Congratulations Wendy Tien! Since joining the Uwill team, Wendy has completed over 100 sessions across California.
Check out our interview with Wendy where she talks about the importance of working with young people, the different reasons students need access to Uwill, and the importance being present.
What would you say excites you the most about working with Uwill?
I’m really interested in this population. I have a lot of young people in my life and just finding out that there was a platform that really just targeted them and was available to them to use at their will was amazing. So I’m so happy to be able to join Uwill.
Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
I’ve seen them just come in in different ways. Sometimes they just drop in because they have a test and they’re super anxious. So it’s convenient for them to find a therapist right at that hour that they need them. Other times they’re far away from home or they don’t feel comfortable talking to their parents or they haven’t made many friends. So I think something like Uwill so important for students to be able to access.
What aspect of your work would you say that you enjoy the most?
I enjoy meeting all the students that are so different. I’m just so impressed that they are interested in their own mental health and they’re being proactive. It just excites me as a provider that I can be participating in something that I feel like is proactive and helps them to stay well and stay functional and to be healthy adults.
What is the most important lesson that you have learned through your work?
I think that the most important lesson is that there’s no issue that’s too small to be present for. For someone who’s in need, I think just to see the look on their face to have some relief that someone is there and that they were able to speak about what was important to them in the moment, has been great.
What was it that attracted you to working with Uwill?
I was attracted to Uwill because I have so many young people in my life. I have older children and through meeting a lot of their friends I realize that they are an underserved population. So, it was exciting to be able to just really work with them exclusively.
What impact has Uwill had on you as a professional?
I think Uwill has been sort of a breath of fresh air because I’ve been working in community mental health for many years. The people that we see are kind of in the later stages of struggling with their mental health. So with Uwill, it’s been nice to see people who are at the beginning and through psychoeducation and support it’s just been really nice to feel like you’re making an impact in helping them stay healthy.
Would you recommend working with Uwill to a colleague?
Definitely. I would recommend Uwill because the population is great. There’s great flexibility and scheduling. And I think it would give them a new perspective on being a clinician in these times.
Do you have any advice for students who may be stressed about the upcoming school year?
I think the best advice would be just take things day to day. I think just, getting out of your bed, showing up to class, taking some notes. I think that’s going to put you in a good position to stay up to date and not feel stressed and overwhelmed.
