New Jersey Renews Historic Partnership with Uwill

On May 7, 2024, during Mental Health Awareness Month, Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way and Secretary of Higher Education Brian K. Bridges announced the renewal of its first-in-the-nation partnership with Uwill that provides New Jersey college students withfree, 24/7/365 access to mental health and wellness support  through the remainder of the Murphy administration (spring 2026). The partnership was launched in 2023 and currently serves students at 45 eligible higher education institutions in the state.

“There is no reason why any young person should struggle and now for any college student in this great state they won’t have to.” said Lieutenant Governor Way.

The announcement means currently enrolled students, students enrolling to start college in New Jersey this fall, and those who plan to enroll with the Class of 2028 will all benefit from this free support until April 2026.

“New Jersey is creating a blueprint for stronger mental health on our college campuses and we’re meeting students where they are along their mental health journey.” said Secretary Bridges “This work that we’re doing with Uwill is one of, if not, the thing I’m most proud of in my career.”

Speaking at a press conference held at Montclair State University, Assemblywoman Andrea Katz from New Jersey’s 8th district announced that she is introducing the Mental Health Early Access on Campus Act, a piece of legislation designed to provide mental health solutions for students even after the Murphy administration.

“We know that mental health services that our kids need are not going to end when we change governors,” said Assemblywoman Katz “We need to make sure that all of this is codified into law.”

Members of the Montclair State University administration also took the podium to express their excitement about the extension.

“I’m excited that the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education heard us when we said ‘Hey! This Uwill thing is working! You can’t take it away!’” said Montcliar State President Jonathan Koppell “I think I wasn’t the only President that implored the state to continue this service and I’m enormously appreciative of Governor Murphy’s significant investment in mental health through this contract.”

“When you start an organization like Uwill these are the days you dream of.” said Adam Ring, Uwill’s Vice President, Strategy “The validation of our idea to use technology to provide 24/7 access to care to students at every institution.”
