Tips for Boosting Self-Esteem
February is International Boost Self-Esteem Month. Self-esteem consistency ranks among the top areas of focus for students on the Uwill platform. The Uwill Clinical Team shares some tips to help boost ones self-esteem.
Erin Andrews, LMHC, LPCC
Apply the “friend test” to your self-talk. In other words, if you wouldn’t say something to a friend that you say to yourself, rephrase it with the same compassion and understanding you would offer to someone else.
Crystal Bedigian, MA, LPC
Many people say such negative things about themselves and the more we say the more it gets stuck in our head and becomes our go-to view of the world and ourselves. But the same is true with positive self-talk. It might feel like a lie at first, but the more often we say and think positive thoughts, the more we start to believe it until it becomes second nature to view things in a more positive light.
Stephanie Black Dos Santos, LICSW
While it’s natural to compare ourselves to others, it’s important to keep perspective when we do so. Comparison can lead us to forget that rarely do we see the full picture of someone else’s journey. We don’t always see their stressful moments, dark days, sleepless nights, or the challenges they’ve overcome. Social comparison can fuel self-doubt and quickly shift focus away from what’s important. Instead of measuring yourself against the progress of others, focus instead on your personal growth. Remember that while you may not be where you want to be, you’re probably nowhere close to where you used to be. And remember when it comes to social media, it’s okay to unfollow or hide accounts that trigger negative self-judgment!
Amaura Kemmerer, LICSW
Try to do a daily reflection of what went well, what you’re proud of or accomplished each day. It is easy to focus on the single thing that didn’t go as planned and allow negative self talk to take over. If you step back and assess, you will probably find you have a lot more positive to focus on than areas you are falling short.
Lauren Weber, LCSW
Write down positive affirmations about yourself and place them where you’ll see them regularly – on your desk, mirror, or in your phone. This way, you can easily access them during difficult moments to help shift your mindset.
