Uwill Counselor Hosts LGBTQIA+ Student Mental Health Webinar
For Pride Month, Uwill’s Counselor Community held a webinar designed to educate counselors on how to support LGBTQIA+ student mental health on June 17th. The webinar was hosted by Justin Mendoza, LCSW, CAADC (he/they) and covered topics such as mental health trends in the LGBTQIA+ student population, best practices in supporting LGBTQIA+ students, and skills that can be incorporated into sessions with LGBTQIA+ students.
“This institutional systemic discrimination that LGBTQ+ folks typically experience is something that we need to be aware of as health care providers because they are looking at us as such.” says Mendoza “We need to be aware that there may be some negative experiences that they’ve had in the past that we need to be sensitive to and maybe overcome.”
Uwill’s community of more than 1,000 licensed counselors frequently organizes peer-led webinars on relevant topics like this, providing opportunities for education, networking, and earning continuing education credits.
