July Hero of the Month: Amber M., MS, LPCC, LPC
Every month, we spotlight a counselor who has gone above and beyond for Uwill as our Hero of the Month. This month, we are delighted to recognize Amber M., MS, LPCC, LPC as Uwill’s Monthly Hero.
What excites you the most about working with Uwill?
I am excited to work for Uwill because it allows me the opportunity to continue serving a population I genuinely enjoy working with—college students. I also appreciate the autonomy and flexibility I have in managing my schedule, which allows me to maintain a healthy work-life balance. That balance helps me show up fully present and engaged, enabling me to provide the best possible care for my clients.
I’m also grateful for the company’s commitment to supporting its clinicians. The ongoing training opportunities, access to valuable resources, and responsive administrative and clinical support create an environment where I feel encouraged to continue learning and growing. It’s reassuring to know that support is readily available, allowing me to focus on providing high-quality care while continuing to develop as a therapist.
Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
College is a transformative time filled with new opportunities, responsibilities, and challenges. Having access to a platform like Uwill through their university helps ensure that students can receive mental health support during this important stage of life, including students who may not have otherwise sought or been able to access care. The convenience and flexibility of being able to choose a provider and schedule appointments around classes, work, and other commitments also removes many of the barriers that can prevent students from seeking help.
When mental health services are accessible and easy to navigate, students are better equipped to manage life’s challenges, build resilience, and thrive both personally and academically. By investing in their students’ mental health, universities can also support improved student retention, persistence, and graduation rates, while fostering the overall well-being of their campus communities. Providing access to a platform like Uwill demonstrates a meaningful commitment to helping students succeed both in and outside of the classroom.
What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most?
It is both a privilege and an honor to support students during such an important chapter of their lives. I enjoy connecting with students from a variety of colleges and universities across the three states where I provide services, and I value the diversity of experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives they bring. Every student has a unique story, and it is incredibly meaningful to walk alongside them as they navigate challenges, discover their strengths, and work toward their goals.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is having the opportunity to support students throughout their college journey and celebrate milestones such as graduation with them. Watching their growth, resilience, and confidence develop over time—and knowing I had the privilege of being part of that journey—is one of the greatest rewards of being a therapist.
What are some skills you have learned from Uwill that you have been able to apply in your everyday practice?
Working at Uwill has strengthened my ability to quickly build rapport and establish a strong therapeutic alliance with clients. It has also helped me become more intentional in setting collaborative goals and prioritizing the concerns that will have the greatest impact during our time together.
This experience has reinforced the importance of using evidence-based interventions efficiently while remaining flexible to each student’s unique needs. I’ve also become more skilled at helping clients identify practical strategies they can begin using right away, empowering them to build confidence and resilience beyond our sessions. These skills have enhanced my everyday clinical practice by making my work more focused, collaborative, and purposeful, while ensuring that each session is meaningful and supports lasting growth.
What was it that first attracted you to working with Uwill?
What initially attracted me to Uwill was the opportunity to continue serving college students, a population I had come to love working with during my five years in a university counseling center.
I was also drawn to Uwill’s clinician-centered approach. The reasonable documentation expectations, flexibility, and autonomy over my schedule stood out as qualities that would allow me to maintain a healthy work-life balance while continuing to provide high-quality, client-centered care. It felt like an environment where I could both support students effectively and continue to grow professionally.
How has being a member of Uwill’s Counselor Community impacted you as a professional?
Being a member of Uwill’s Counselor Community has provided me with the opportunity to expand my practice by serving students across three different states, allowing me to better understand the diverse needs, experiences, and resources of students in different regions. That broader perspective has strengthened my cultural humility and adaptability as a clinician.
Another meaningful aspect of this experience has been the opportunity to provide continuity of care when appropriate. As students graduate or exhaust their university-sponsored therapy sessions, some choose to continue working with me through my private practice. Being able to support clients through those important life transitions, when clinically appropriate and at their request, has been incredibly rewarding and has also contributed to the thoughtful growth of my private practice.
Would you recommend working with Uwill to a colleague?
Absolutely! I have recommended Uwill to colleagues and would continue to do so without hesitation.
What advice do you have for students who may be struggling as the summer comes to an end and the new school year is on the horizon?
As students prepare to transition into a new school year, it is important to remember that no concern is too small to seek support for. You are deserving of care and do not have to navigate challenges alone. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, stressed, or simply needing someone to talk with, reaching out for support early can make a meaningful difference.
Being proactive about your mental health and addressing concerns as they arise can help prevent challenges from becoming overwhelming later in the semester. Taking care of your well-being allows you to be better equipped to manage academic responsibilities, relationships, and the many changes that come with college life. Seeking support is a sign of self-awareness and strength, and there are resources available to help you succeed both personally and academically.
