May Hero of the Month: Bobby Hiep Bui, PhD

Every month, we spotlight a counselor who has gone above and beyond for Uwill as our Hero of the Month. This month, we are delighted to recognize Bobby Hiep Bui, PhD, as Uwill’s Monthly Hero.

Since joining the Uwill team in April 2024, Bobby has always gone above and beyond for Uwill. In that time, he’s had over 500 appointments, impacting the lives of students across Massachusetts and New York, all with a very high feedback rating.

Therefore, this month, we are delighted to recognize Bobby as our Uwill Hero for all his contributions and support for our students and the larger Uwill community. Bobby— thank you again for all you do. We are truly grateful for your support and commitment.

Check out our interview with Bobby as he discusses healing through relationships, working as a university professor, and tips for students adjusting to the summer.

What excites you the most about working with Uwill
What excites me most about working with Uwill is the opportunity to continue supporting students in a meaningful and accessible way. Throughout my career, I have been deeply committed to helping students find greater purpose, stability, and success in their lives, and Uwill provides a platform that allows me to do this on a regular basis.

Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
Platforms like Uwill help reduce many of those barriers by offering students a more approachable, flexible, and user-friendly way to connect with care. I am grateful that so many students experience the platform as accessible and easy to navigate, because increasing access to support can make a significant difference in whether a student ultimately reaches out for help.

What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most?
I strongly believe that what is damaged in relationships can only be healed through relationships; therefore, healing depends upon a therapeutic alliance built on the mutual effort, hope, vulnerability, and care that both individuals bring to the process. For me, very few things in life are as rewarding as building this kind of meaningful connection with another person.

What are some skills you have learned from Uwill that you have been able to apply in your everyday practice?
One of the most valuable skills I have strengthened through my work with Uwill is my ability to conduct short-term therapy more effectively. Because sessions are often shorter than in traditional outpatient settings and some students are limited to a set number of sessions, I have learned how to work in a more focused, intentional, and efficient way while still building meaningful therapeutic connections. This experience has helped me become more attuned to identifying students’ immediate needs, collaboratively setting goals, and helping students make meaningful progress within a limited timeframe.

What was it that first attracted you to working with Uwill?
As someone who has spent much of my professional life as a university professor, the opportunity to work with students as they navigate both their academic and personal lives is what initially drew me to working with Uwill.

Would you recommend working with Uwill to a colleague?
Yes, I would absolutely recommend working with Uwill to a colleague. Uwill offers meaningful opportunities for professional growth and learning while also providing flexibility in scheduling within a supportive and student-centered environment.

With the summer approaching, what advice do you have for students needing to adjust to new settings and routines?
We are living in unprecedented times and as a result many students are carrying understandable anxiety, uncertainty, and exhaustion. More than ever, I would encourage students to build and remain in a community. Stay connected to people who help you feel supported, grounded, and understood, and do not hesitate to seek help if you find yourself struggling. Adjusting to change and navigating life successfully are rarely things people do well entirely on their own.
