May Rising Star: Melissa Perez Figueroa, LPC
Uwill’s Monthly Rising Star acknowledges one counselor every month who has “shined bright” in support of Uwill in their first year as a member of our counseling community. Congratulations, Melissa Perez Figueroa , LPC! Since joining the Uwill team, Melissa has completed over 100 sessions across Texas.
Check out our interview with Melissa as she explains the satisfaction of working with diverse students, the joy in ah-ha moments, and tips for students adjusting to a summer schedule.
What excites you the most about working with Uwill?I really enjoy being able to support diverse students, helping them navigate and overcome their struggles, exploring their strengths, and fulfilling their goals. It brings me so much satisfaction and joy knowing that I am part of a wonderful community that wants the best for our students.
Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
As a therapist, I value easy access and equity. Uwill is easy to access and it provides a welcoming and safe space whenever they need it. Students during this stage in their lives need mental health resources. Many students currently face distress, financial concerns, a lack of coping skills, and support. So just being there for them reminds me of my purpose and commitment.
What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most
Between the silences, the laughs, the cries, and the ah-ha moments, it brings me so much satisfaction and joy to see students realize their abilities, their inner strength, and see them overcome their challenges or even learn that it is okay to just be okay! I really enjoy and care for every student; they are unique and special.
What are some skills you have learned from Uwill that you have been able to apply in your everyday practice?
Working with a diverse population has helped me learn and realize many more things than I thought. I have learned that it is not just about my expertise and what I can offer but also about offering a safe space for them and helping them explore that they know more than they think. I am just in the passenger’s seat and providing the support they need to strive and overcome their challenges.
What was it that first attracted you to working with Uwill?
Currently, I form part of a group practice so easy access and flexibility are really important to me. The sessions provide a unique space for the student and I to work on specific scenarios, topics, or better yet, gear towards their needs.
How has being a member of Uwill’s Counselor Community impacted you as a professional?
Being part of Uwill community helped me learn and gain more skills and gain more confidence in a remote setting. It’s good to have a supportive team and wonderful resources I can utilize to sharpen my skill set and be part of a platform that is transforming lives.
Would you recommend working with Uwill to a colleague?
Yes, definitely, it has many wonderful components, benefits, and resources! It is a unique experience and the most important one: be part of the journey of students that needs our support.
With the summer approaching, what advice do you have for students needing to adjust to new settings and routines?
Changes can be exciting but also worrisome and for some, scary. Keep in mind the coping skills, the available resources, creating a realistic daily routine, and maintain or create your support network. And most importantly, we are here for you! Do not hesitate to reach out to the Uwill community.
