March Hero of the Month: Sarah Tanner, LMFT

Every month, we spotlight a counselor who has gone above and beyond for Uwill as our Hero of the Month. This month, we are delighted to recognize Sarah Tanner, LMFT, as Uwill’s Monthly Hero.

Since joining the Uwill team in September 2024, Sarah  has always gone above and beyond for Uwill. In that time, she’s had over 500 appointments, impacting the lives of students across Idaho and Washington, all with a very high feedback rating.

Therefore, this month, we are delighted to recognize Sarah as our Uwill Hero for all her contributions and support for our students and the larger Uwill community. Sarah — thank you again for all you do. We are truly grateful for your support and commitment.

What excites you the most about working with Uwill?
I love this student population; from the youngest to the oldest student, each has such unique stories and are so earnest in their approach to life, to overcoming, and to making a better way forward. It is refreshing and joyful to work with each of my clients!

Can you illustrate the importance of a student being able to access a platform like Uwill?
Many of my clients have such limited financial resources, some lack family support altogether, and often, because they do not yet have established careers, they also lack access to reliable health care. So having access to a resource like Uwill, at the touch of their fingertips, is a literal game and life changer for them. They can heal and gain skills and learn about resources they otherwise would absolutely have no access to otherwise.

What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most?
The students! Because of the season of life they are in, already engaged learners through their various programs, I find that many of my clients are already primed and ready to learn and grow. They really are engaged clients and it is awesome to experience their journey with them.

What are some skills you have learned from Uwill that you have been able to apply in your everyday practice?
Suicide supports and trainings have translated really well from my experiences at Uwill to my other clients.

What was it that first attracted you to working with Uwill?
The population! I had worked as an online instructor before coming to Uwill and I had really missed working with this special client population. So when I discovered Uwill, I jumped at the opportunity to support students again.

How has being a member of Uwill’s Counselor Community impacted you as a professional?
It has kept me connected to my values; sometimes in the private practice world, we get really limited by our niche and client range. Having such a diversity of clients through the Uwill platform, and the trainings that are offered, helps keep my horizon opened a little wider.

What advice do you have for students who may be adjusting to a new academic schedule or routine?
Life is all about balancing! Just like we have to pivot, adapt, and maneuver on a balancing board, the same comes as each new quarter, each new semester, each new set of professors, roommates, and internships come our way. Give yourself lots of grace, set those goals, and be ok with being flexible when needed.
